Tortues vapeur, le nouveau projet de Martin Tétreault et Susanna Hood (conçu soit pour le studio d’enregistrement, soit pour la scène), est une collaboration très attendue de la part de deux amis de longue date qui aménagent, avec leurs outils et leur expérience interdisciplinaires, un terrain de jeu qui leur est propre. « Comme deux enfants sans âge, nous expérimentons à la manière d’un “garage band” dans lequel aucun de nous deux revêt un rôle précis par rapport aux jouets et aux instruments à notre disposition. » Susanna et Martin se syntonisent sur les fréquences qui proviennent de leurs passés respectifs, comme s’ils s’amusaient à voyager dans le temps à l’aide d’un appareil radio. Ils combinent et superposent des matériaux bruts, constitués d’extraits de chansons populaires et de mélodies des dernières soixante années, à des bruits, des rythmes et des textures vocaux et électroniques. Par la déconstruction et la reconstruction, ils créent un paysage sonore teinté de nostalgie, qui existe néanmoins quelque part hors du temps.

A new performance and recording project by Martin Tétreault and Susanna Hood, Tortues Vapeur is a long-awaited collaboration between two long-time friends who bring the tools and skills of their unique interdisciplinary practices to a playground of their own making. Like two ageless kids, we create our own garage-band atmosphere where neither of us have fixed roles in relation to the various toys and instruments at our disposal.

As if travelling across a radio-dial, Susanna and Martin tune to each other through frequencies from the past. They combine and layer found materials (extracts of popular songs and tunes from the last sixty years) with vocal and electronic noises, rhythms and textures. Through deconstruction and reconstruction, they create a sonic landscape tinged with nostalgia, but existing somewhere out of time.
